Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The MaxiScan code reader supports all OBD2 protocols, including the newly released Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol. Though it is small, it is able to retrieve same information as large expensive scanners. This code reader reviews the emission readiness status of OBD monitors and determines the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) status as well as turns off check engine light. It comes with free CD software with over 7000 DTC definitions and is powered via detachable OBD2 cable.

5 out of 5 stars Simple yet effective.   November 21, 2009

This code reader doesn't come with many special features, but it does cover the basics. It can read OBD-II codes (in my case, clarifying a problem that would randomly turn on the dreaded "Check Engine Light"), erase them, check if your car has problems that will cause it to fail an emissions test, and read the VIN number.

Of course, none of the codes or one-sentence descriptions will tell you much about which parts are affected, but that information is easy enough to find online. Just knowing the code led me to several forums and sites where others knew about the part in question, and I was able to find the part on an auction site for hundreds less than mechanics would charge.

I was worried that such a cheap unit would be out of date somehow, but the manual and code lists are from May 2009 (pretty recent) and the unit worked exactly as promised (on my 2004 Civic).

5 out of 5 stars Simple But Effective   November 11, 2009

I spent a bit of time researching OBD scanners before I bought my Autel MaxiScan. There are many many options available out there in the market - USB connectivity, SD card slots, full displays, detachable cords, and so on. Although the more you spend the more features you get, there are three major features I think an OBD scanner must do: 1) pull generic AND manufacturer codes, 2) delete codes/reset the computer, and 3) check if the computer and the subsystems (02 sensors, ERG system, and so on) are ready to be inspected.

This tiny unit does all three major functions - and that's about it. It will only display the code, not what hit means. But it comes with a book that interprets generic codes, and a CD for manufacturer specific codes. All this information is also readily available online.

If you don't need an OBD scanner with tons of features and just need the core functions, this is a great little unit and has been well worth the small investment. You'll be surprised how many of your friends have lit check engine lights that you can help them with.

5 out of 5 stars Great scanner for cheap   November 9, 2009

I normally go to AutoZone to get my codes scanned for free, but for the low price of this scanner, it's worth buying for the convenience and not having to deal with someone trying to sell you parts. It's simple, quick, and works great on my Chevy Blazer and a friend's Isuzu Rodeo.

5 out of 5 stars Scanner works great!!!   November 4, 2009

I got this to troubleshoot error codes I keep getting on my car after modifying it. This has been a huge help, with my CEL coming on every few days. Its super easy to use easy to read and operate, it even includes a code book that's covers all the major codes you might get, I did still have to go online for manufacturer specific codes though but no biggie it still read them.
