Purchased to monitor engine/radiator temperature to diagnose (false) overheating. Works well - extremely simple. It gives a continuously updated reading while the trigger is depressed, and also shows the highest recorded temperature during the measurement (you can hold it down for as short or long as you like). The display automatically shuts off just a couple seconds after you release the trigger, so you have to make sure to write down or remember the maximum reading because it will reset with the next trigger pull. Carrying case was nice - If left out in the sun it can overheat and will give an error message and be unable to read until it cools off (oops...). A little difficult to monitor engine parts because the beam spreads out 1 inch for every 12 inches away from the surface. This means you have to get as close as possible to what your measuring if you want it to be very accurate. (I targeted a radiator hose and didn't realize the engine exhaust pipe was in line a few feet behind it - got a REALLY high reading over 400 degrees.) Also, discovered that it works well to figure out what walls in your house are letting in the most heat/cold.
