I have read several books on SolidWorks and I have to say that, although "SolidWorks 2008 for Designers" is not perfect, it is definitely one of the best books on SolidWorks in the market, especially for new students. It uses a systematic approach, has lots of highlighted comments and lots of graphical examples.
I just wish there were few more chapters added to this book covering in details "Simulation" and "Photoworks".
People that give a negative review are probably people who don't put themselves in the student's shoes. From my experience students tend to reject books which "experts" love.

I am teaching SolidWorks every semester at Purdue University Calumet. Based on my experience and the reviews that I get from students and industry professionals, I can say that this is one of the best books on SolidWorks in the market. This book has been translated and published in several countries around the world with great success. The book also comes with free Student and Faculty resources like PowerPoint presentations, student projects, part files of every figure, example, and exercise used in the book. It is a great learning resource for all levels of SolidWorks users. I would like to inform the readers that the review posted by R. Marchel is false and the sole purpose of this review is to defame Prof. Tickoo.

I saw the CADCIM Technologies press release for the SolidWorks 2009 for Designers textbook by Professor Sham Tickoo. I had a good laugh, and then felt sadden that the internet can be manipulated by people trying to sell items which are full of dishonesty. Buyer beware of an author/publisher (same group) that is better in marketing a trogon horse than a good SolidWorks book.
As an instructor, I have heard of Professor Sham Tickoo and his organization (Catia, Inventor, AutoCAD, ProE, Wildfire, etc). He does not teach or even uses SolidWorks. He hires various students to write for him and his company. I met one of his writers for SolidWorks in India last year.
I obtained an evaluation copy of his 2008 book along with others, and tried numerous times to acquire additional classroom materials and technical support for this book. The lack of response, amount and quality of his .ppts would not be suitable at most two or four year colleges or universities. I am not sure he has heard of copyright issues too!
The book is very poorly written (fragmented English), and structured badly. The author/s uses very poor design intent on most of their models, and misses the concept of the ASME Y14 standards in 90 plus percent of his drawings. The assembly section is not much better, (poor techniques and instructions on selected entities. I can go on and on, but hopefully you are starting to see the truth about the Book.
Most of the models are from the SW Help files or 3D ContentCentral. OH, don't even get me started on the so called "Surface Modeling section". It looks very similar, in most areas to a great SW Surfacing book presently on the market on this site. Thought, get the Surfacing book, if you realy want to understand Surfacing! Check it out!

I purchased this textbook - "way too expensive" - because it was required reading in my CAD Engineering class. The author's writing style, poor grammar, and lack of editing (basic mistakes even for a beginner like me) made this book extremely excruciating and difficult to get through. The free online SolidWorks tutorials were more helpful than this book! A suggestion, rewrite your hole wizard section!
The book did not cover assemblies (Mate types, configurations, etc. and drawings (Auxiliary, detail, crop, removed, etc) very well. The author states one thing, and does another.
A lot of terminology is used with little or no explanations, and his procedures and practices contradicts the SolidWorks online tutorials.

It's a decent book to start off learning Solidworks. Helpful examples and tips. However, with any CAD (or other software), practice (after reading the book) will make you better.
No real complaints, but only gave a 4/5 because didn't see anything amazing. Gets the job done regardless.
