3 out of 5 stars Cute little coffe table book on mechanisms   October 24, 2009
J. Holdahl (South Dakota)
This is a nice little book on mechanisms - best for a coffee table or waiting room. Fairly low on useful detail but good for an overview or exposure to many different types and applications of mechanisms. For a more thorough book, I highly recommend Mechanisms and Mechanical Devices Sourcebook, Fourth Edition which has a broader spectrum of movements that is well categorized and with more detailed supporting information.

5 out of 5 stars The basics   August 26, 2009
Juliana Fink (Brasil)
The book "507 mechanical movements - mechanisms and devices" was a really nice surprise. I did not have great expectations when purchased it. One of my hobbies is making mechanical toys, in paper or wood, and I needed some information about mechanical movements. Since it came, I've had very few oportunity of reading it. Both my father and my husband are using it too, for totally different purposes. I believe it's quality rely on being simple, and showing the basic and the principles.

3 out of 5 stars Less interesting than it should be   July 7, 2009

This is a small book, my fault for not reading the dimensions. There are multiple (6 to 8) diagrams per page, so each figure is small. A bigger problem is that there is no context for the movements. One can follow how everything within a figure meshes, but you would be hard pressed to see how some of these would fit into a real machine. Also, there are many repeats with minor variations on mechanisms.

5 out of 5 stars The MUST HAVE book   May 25, 2009

The title tells it all. This book is so handy for the person who likes to make things.

5 out of 5 stars Steam Punk Dream   May 24, 2009

I got this book to serve as inspiration for an Art Nevoux project I'm working on. I've fallen in love with all the movements and mechanisms pictured within. I'm not in the demographic who actually uses this sort of thing, but, if you're looking for a small something for a mechanic or miller/machinist this is a neat little gift and just a generally cool book to have laying around.

The book features individual movements to accomplish tasks within a machine. From watch escapements to self closing weir gates for streams. Also a great assortment of mechanical doo-dads and whatsits from universal joints for your steam work factory to those little lever things villeins tie damsels to shortly before getting beaten up by the hero.

...or you could just look at the pictures (all 507 of them!)

You should buy this book 1. Because it's a classic. 2. It's can give others false impressions about how smart you are. 3. It's too cheap not too.
