| Customer Reviews: Surface Cars of Philadelphia 1911-1965 July 23, 2008 Joseph Edward Clark (Philadelphia PA USA) This book is a history of the "rolling stock" of all the types of streetcars that was owned by the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Co.
and it's successor the Philadelphia Transporation co.
The book is crammed with photographs of the various streetcars with most
but not all taken between 1911-1926. The book begins with the arrival
of Thomas E. Mitten in 1911 and his role in the getting the PRT to have
J.G. Brill construct 1,500 "Nearside" cars from 1911-1913.
It also goes into with Mitten's conflict with A. Merritt Taylor.
In addittion it provides a most informative series of tables in the back
that list arrival dates, conversion dates(many of the arrived with only
doors at the front, and were later converted to center exit.)
As well as a table showing all the routes that were in existance as of Mitten's arrival in 1911, the re-routings and the years they were discountined.
Any person who is intrested in Urban History or Mass Transit History
or Philadelphia History ought to buy this book.
