Customer Reviews: Senft LT Stirling Book August 26, 2009 W. Carey (Arlington, Texas) Cover construction of a 6 1/2" low temp Stirling engine. Explains the concepts behind the design decisions. A little math shown in the text but not much.
If you want to understand the Low Temp Stirling and then build an example that will run on the heat of your hand in a cool room, this will do that if you build carefully. Requires a lathe to make the parts.
Well worth the money.
Outstanding introduction to learning and building a LTD engine February 20, 2008 M. Harris 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is an outstanding succinct introduction to Low Temperature Differential Engines. These LTD engines are the ones you see running on the heat of your hand or a coffee cup. Very intriguing and great conversation pieces.
This has a moderately detailed yet approachable introduction to how these work and the basic design criteria (though it's not a design book).
Following that are very detailed plans for a relatively simple to build hand held LTD engine. Note by relatively simple I mean drill press with perhaps a milling vise near minimum. Note you can source some of the more critical parts off the internet.
Along with this book I would also recommend An Introduction to Stirling Engines for your first forays into Stirling engines.
See my Introduction to and Making Basic Stirling Engines list.
