3 out of 5 stars Stops short on how-to and photo's for a beginners book   February 26, 2007

As a book intended for beginners and those without machine shop, this book stops short on photos. I'm fine with the 2nd and following projects having less detail, or detail on critical areas only, but the first project stops short on photos just when the assembly and such gets interesting. As such, it's no better than any of the internet "build a can sterling engine" pdf's or web pages.

I do otherwise like some of the thoughts on substitute materials to make bearings, cranks, seals, diaphrams, etc.

So it's borderline OK, but I'd recommend first just googling "build a can sterling engine" and pick your half dozen candidates for build. And check out my Listmania list "Introduction to and Making Basic Stirling Engines" as I wrote it after going through a lot of books trying to get started on some nice aproachable projects.

This book will dissapoint if you buy it based on the title.
