5 out of 5 stars Know Your Diesel   February 5, 2010
Ken Douglas (Landlocked in Reno)
My copies of this book has grease stained fingerprints throughout. A lot of folks have told me they think this book is redundant, because much of the info is covered in Mr. Calder's Mechanical & Electrical Manual but this smaller book is easier to work with when working around your engine and the material is presented differently enough that the book is one I believe you should have if you live on a boat.

5 out of 5 stars Great, but . . .   December 10, 2009

I'm at a bit of a loss on how to review this. It's a great reference, BUT if you already have Calder's Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual: How to Maintain, Repair, and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems (referred to my most cruisers just as "Calder"), this book does not add a lot that's not covered there. If you already own Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual: How to Maintain, Repair, and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems, I'd recommend getting a book by a different author on the diesel as there's a greater likelihood of one of them having just the piece of information you need. My suggestion of an alternative:

Troubleshooting Marine Diesels

Other reviews have covered this book in detail, plus there's a new edition out, so I won't go into further detail.

5 out of 5 stars I love being an amateur   November 24, 2009
Francois Cote (Montreal)
Nigel Calder wrote many books, but «Marine Diesel Engines» is the first one I actually read. I can't wait for the others, because his style is straightforward, his method is step-by-step and logical and the pictures are handpicked and drive the final «gotcha!». In other words, Mr. Calder knows I'm an amateur and takes the time to explain everything and make me feel intelligent. I love being an amateur. Francois Cote, Montreal, QC, Canada.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book   November 21, 2008
John F. Sullivan (Atlanta, GA)
This book is a very helpful tool when approaching a marine diesel engine. This is a good book that bridges the gap between the specific engine manual and my general lack of diesel engine knowledge. Nigel Calder is clear and understandable as always.

I try to read as many books on engines as I can. I own GotEngines.com and I always have a strong interest in learning more about each and every engine, especially diesel engines.

Unfortunately I carry very few marine engines, but as an engine expert I'd recommend this book to anyone!
