Product Description This densely illustrated, hands-on guide to diesel engine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair renders its subject more user-friendly than ever before. Finally, boatowners who grew up with gas engines can set aside their fears about tinkering with diesels, which are safer and increasingly more prevalent. As in other volumes in the International Marine Sailboat Library, every step of every procedure is illustrated, so that users can work from the illustrations alone. The troubleshooting charts in the second chapter--probably the most comprehensive ever published--are followed by system-specific chapters, allowing readers to quickly diagnose problems, then turn to the chapter with solutions. Diesel engine systems covered include: mechanical; oil; fresh- and raw-water cooling; low- and high-pressure fuel; exhaust; starting; charging; transmission and stern gear.

Great primer on diesel engines, and trouble shooter as well October 18, 2009 w22w (Lake Tahoe, NV) I purchased a 27 year old sailboat with a 27 year old (but well working) yanmar inboard in june. Determined to not be stranded i figured i should learn a bit about the engine.
This book is a really good starting place. It is very clear and concise. I find it easy to read and assumes you don't know much about marine diesels - which i didn't, at least before i read it!
Each chapter is basically half basic theory, and half trouble shooting algorithms.
For the beginner, it's a must have, in my opinion. For the seasoned pro, they might find the theory parts a bit basic but the trouble shooting guides, i would imagine, would be very valuable. I think when things go wrong and the engine does not start, having a clear path to trouble-shoot the problem is helpful, especially when the stress level goes up and clouds the mind.
It's Exactly What It Says It Is September 28, 2009 BillH (GA - USA) Don't compare Peter's book with a factory manual or Calder's detailed work on marine diesels. This is a troubleshooting guide. It is structured as such with the best troubleshooting flow charts you'll find anywhere and it will lead you to the source of the problem. What you can and are willing to do then is up to you. It may require more than you can do to fix or it might be easy and you'll be on your way again in minutes.
I know Peter and understand what he was trying to do with this book and writing a detailed dissertation on all things diesel was not it. This book is not for your bookshelf at home, it's for your boat library and you should keep it on your boat. I think it's brilliant in its simplicity and ease of use to get you to the heart of your problems in a few quick steps. It also serves as a valuable guide to maintaining your marine diesel properly but that should also be in your engine manual. Don't look for more than is there. It's for "troubleshooting" and it's the best!
Book Review January 19, 2009 John A. Zawacki (Detroit, MI) I found this book to be very easy to read and understand. It doesn't get too deep on the subject matter but deep enough that it's helpful in better understanding Marine Diesel engines and how they operate. Great book!! Highly recommended.
Good overall information on Yanmar Diesels June 12, 2008 Richard Frehs 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I specifically purchased this book for the information on Yanmar diesels. I was not disappointed, but later found a factory type manual that was much better and also a source for Yanmar parts. I think I will closely compare both manuals to see if I will resell this or not. I would still give this three stars.
Excellent Guide April 17, 2008 Terri L. Sanders (Balto., Md) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great book for the average mechanic fixing of diagnosing his/her boats mechanical malfunctions. Look up symptoms and it gives you all problems which could cause them. Saved a bundle of money by being able to fix the problem myself with the help of this book.
