Product Description
Many people modify their Harley-Davidson enginesâand find the results disappointing. What they might not knowâand what this book teachesâis that emphasizing horsepower over torque, the usual approach, makes for a difficult ride. Author Bill Rook has spent decades perfecting the art of building torque-monster V-twin Harley engines. Here he brings that experience to bear, guiding motorcycle enthusiasts through the modifications that make a bike not just fast but comfortable to ride. With clear, step-by-step instructions, his book shows readers how to get high performance out of their Harleysâand enjoy them, too. Excellent Sportster Engine Book May 25, 2009 Jan Trendowski (E. Haddam, CT, USA) This was one of the first books I bought when I started modifying my 2002 Sportster. Since then, I've gone on to read Buzzelli, Remus, Hamill and even the out of print books by Denish. Whle each of the books has their positive aspects, I consider Mr. Rook's books to one of the best for 99% of the home mechanics out there. His theory is solid, his explanations are understandable, and I frankly consider his writing style to be outstanding. While a chapter of the book covers magnetos, it is less out dated than a method he uses to explain ignition theory. I have read everything I could on Harley engines and I couldn't imagine finding such a wealth of information just surfing the internet. Since buying the book, I've bought 5 more just to give to friends with Harleys, just to show them what can be done with their engines. As Mr. Rook states in his book, achieving engine power is a series of comromises: a drag bike won't work well in the street and a street bike loses drag races. HIs book is similarly a middle ground between a boring manual and a glossy coffee table book, not boring and not superficial. Far from being outdated, the topics described such as fuel/air ratios, carb modification, and compression theory are both current and correct. As a result of reading his book, I have been able to speak to speed shop mechanics on their level and have successfully designed and built my own modified sportster engine. I have nothing but praise for this book and await his next effort.
How to Build a Harley Davidson Torque Monster January 27, 2009 Larry E. Harrison (Houston, TX USA) I am always looking & searching for technical information pertaining to hopping-up Harley Davidson engines. This book has a lot of interesting reading as well as some technical info. that fills the gap in a couple of areas. My wife disagrees with me buying another book because she thinks one or two is enough but she does not understand or appreciates the fact that there is not just one book that covers everything I need and want to know. It is well worth buying if you have a need for speed.

I'm an experienced home mechanic and found some things useful in this book but not much. He dwells on old Sportsters with magnetos which these days are nearly extinct and more work than they are worth. He dismisses Evos which is what I have and gives only a passing glance at CV carbs. He also does not give much info on cams and how to pick one. It was published last year but is outdated already. He is an old school wrench and it shows. You could get more info by surfing the Web and joining a chat room or talking to the manufacturers and it's free. Too bad.
Great Book!! April 1, 2008 Ric (Tennessee) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you like hot rodding your bike or just want to read about it get this book. A very good premmer on how to make you bike fast and street worthy at the same time. How to do it with out wasting money and time in the process. Something for every Harley rider.
