Good book! August 18, 2009 T. Hutchison (Pennsylvania) I've read several "biker" books, including Sonny Bargers. This book is well written and will keep your interest all the way through. Although not the greatest, I still highly recommend for the reader who has an interest in behind the scene look at biker gangs.
a wayward angle:the full story of the hells angles June 1, 2009 Thomas E. Richards
I,am having a hard time keeping my interest in this book about the angels. I really do not care about his school days and he makes the angels sound pretty tame, also he must of had a dictionary on hand for a lot of the word would not be in the angels vocabulary or mine. The only thing I can say is take a chance if you cannot find another book on the angels. After reading ( under and alone) William Queen this angel book is really boring. TR
Don't get your information from a RAT! May 13, 2009 Blood on My Banjo (Dayton, OH USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you want to read something about the Hell's Angels there is a handful of great books by Sonny Barger, the man himself. This book by George Wethern is unreliable at best! Why, because he is. The authors Integrity is very important when selecting a book and this author, by his own admission, has none. DO NOT support him or this book. He is a lying rat! If you feel you must read it, buy it USED! That way no more money goes to reward a lying rat who stabs his friends in the back to save himself. Whether you like the Angels or not, being a turncoat is not respectable or acceptable.
A wayward Angel: The full story March 26, 2009 Vic 'Preacher' Shurtz (northern California) I almost feel sorry for George. He lived the life. He broke bread with the Angels. He got his 1% tat with Sonny. Some go to jail as opposed to telling all. George made a bad decission, and it cost him his Brotherhood.
This is a well writen book that will get you into the heart of the Angels as only a true member see's it. I enjoyer the read, but have a problem with brothers turning.
No Redemption, But a Solid Read March 7, 2009 Shooter (US) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
When one considers this was the first book written from the perspective of a known insider, one can appreciate that in 1978 when first released, it was granted a certain status it did not deserve simply by virtue of its singularity. 31 years after the fact, there is more nostalgic and cultural value here as an amplification of Hunter s Thompson's limited scope.
The headlines in every major newspaper in the country read "Hells Angels Burial Ground" instantly evoking the shock value still lingering from the Manson Family 5 years earlier.
There is truly nothing noble in sacrificing others. A pig in a three piece suit is still a pig. Too, there seems little "wayward" in the calculating manner by which George hustled and muscled his way to being the conduit for drugs through his club connections. The book denigrates itself into a rant against PCP in the end, as if this somehow makes everything George did less heinous.
But it is a good blend of "insider workings", early club history and not a badly written book. As one with more oratory skills than my own once said:
"Just don't piss down my leg and try to tell me its raining".
You do the crime, you do the time.
Though the material is "dated", I would recommend this as a first read for those interested in the formation and expansion of the club in its prime. However, overlook the Crusader aspects and you'll do OK.
